The workshop highlighted three main themes, including “Arab Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking”, “Global Initiative to Combat Human Trafficking” and “Strategy of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking” based on the five pillars of Prevention, Judicial Prosecution, Punishment, Protection, and International Cooperation.
During the workshop, the Committee explained the initiatives and programmes related to the Prevention pillar, which aims to prevent such crimes by improving the execution of laws, increasing public awareness, exchanging information, collecting data and identifying the international best practices in this area.
Under the Judicial Prosecution pillar, the Committee stressed the promotion of methods of tracking trafficking crimes, developing workers’ skills, and increasing communication between various entities concerned in the UAE. It also discussed the need to establish a unified system for criminal cases of human trafficking, and developing cooperation with traffickers’ countries.
Under the Punishment pillar, the Committee emphasized consolidating legislative laws, improving local laws, and ensuring quick and fair trial as well as protecting the rights of the victims.
Focusing on the Protection pillar, the Committee examined measures such as establishing a fund for the victims and providing for their rehabilitation, vocational training and employment, involving non-governmental organizations, civil society institutions and the private sector.
Under the International Cooperation pillar, the Committee called for effective communication between states and regional and international organizations, signing of Memorandums of Understanding, executing international commitments, and providing training to local employees by international experts.
