As part of the UAE’s efforts to combat human trafficking, the UAE authorities recently arrested a trafficking ring that brought 15 victims of People of Determination (People with disabilities) from Asia to exploit them.
This is considered a crime in accordance with Federal Law No. 51 of 2006 on Combating Human Trafficking Crimes as amended under the Federal Law No. 01 of 2015, which is in line with the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (Palermo Protocol), which the UAE joined in 2009. The protocol is one of the two protocols attached to the Organised Crime Convention.
The Director-General explained that medical and technical evaluation of the victims condition has been carried out by competent authorities to provide them with all their needs. She also lauded Sheikha Fatima’s keenness to support the victims morally and financially so that they have a safe and stable life in their home countries. (WAM)
